01. Our Origin | 源于武当的传统之美

A Story Inspired by Chinese Craftsmanship

Founded in 2015, DAO CRAFTS began with a simple idea: to bring the beauty of traditional Chinese craftsmanship into contemporary life.

Our story is closely connected with the cultural landscape of Wudang Mountain in Hubei, a region renowned for its distinctive architecture, traditional arts, natural landscapes, and centuries-old cultural heritage. Rather than reproducing historical objects exactly as they were, we take inspiration from traditional forms, materials, patterns, and craftsmanship and reinterpret them through a contemporary design perspective.

Founder Li Zhen, a fourth-generation artisan, established the workshop with a deep appreciation for traditional handcraft and the natural materials that have long been valued in Chinese artistic culture.

Today, our Wuhan-based studio continues to develop this approach, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern production methods to create objects that are designed to be appreciated, used, and passed on.

Materials Chosen With Care

At DAO CRAFTS, materials are an essential part of the character of every piece.

We carefully select natural materials such as jade, obsidian, wood, stone, metal, and traditional textile materials, paying attention to their texture, color, durability, and natural variations.

Natural materials are never completely identical, and we consider these differences part of their character rather than imperfections. Subtle changes in grain, color, translucency, and surface texture allow every handmade object to retain its own individuality.

Handcrafted, Refined, and Carefully Finished

Where appropriate, materials are shaped, carved, polished, drilled, assembled, and finished through a combination of traditional handcraft techniques and modern tools.

Our artisans pay particular attention to the details that are easy to overlook: the smoothness of a polished surface, the proportion of individual components, the consistency of a pattern, the strength of a connection, and the way an object feels in the hand.

The goal is not simply to produce something attractive at first glance, but to create objects whose craftsmanship remains enjoyable through years of use.

The visual language of DAO CRAFTS draws inspiration from traditional Chinese aesthetics, where simplicity, proportion, natural materials, balanced composition, and subtle detail have long played an important role.

Rather than filling an object with decorative elements, we often allow the natural beauty of the material and the structure of the design to become the main focus.

A piece of jade may be appreciated for its color and translucency; a piece of wood may reveal its unique grain; a metal object may emphasize clean lines and carefully finished surfaces.

This approach allows traditional inspiration to coexist naturally with contemporary lifestyles.

Our products are created for real life.

Some pieces are designed to be worn as jewelry or accessories, while others are intended for interior decoration, collecting, gifting, cultural appreciation, or everyday use. Our Wuhan studio serves as an important part of DAO CRAFTS’ design and production process, providing a space where artisans, designers, and production specialists can work together.

Traditional handcraft remains at the heart of our approach, while modern equipment is used where it can improve consistency, efficiency, and product quality.

This combination allows us to respect established craftsmanship while avoiding the limitations of simply reproducing historical techniques.

A More Responsible Approach to Materials

We also pay attention to the efficient use of materials throughout production.

Where practical, smaller stone and wood pieces can be incorporated into decorative components, smaller craft objects, or other creative applications. By finding new uses for suitable material remnants, we aim to reduce unnecessary waste while allowing more of each natural material to become part of the finished collection.

We believe that quality starts long before the final polishing stage.

Materials are selected according to their intended application, with attention given to appearance, texture, structural characteristics, and suitability for craftsmanship. For natural materials, variation is expected, and product descriptions are provided to help customers understand that each individual piece may have its own characteristics.

We avoid using symbolism as a substitute for product quality.

Instead, we focus on the things customers can actually experience: the material, craftsmanship, construction, finish, design, and overall usability of each product.

Clear and Responsible Product Information

We aim to provide straightforward information about materials and craftsmanship wherever possible, allowing customers to make informed purchasing decisions.

For handmade and natural-material products, slight variations in color, grain, shape, and texture may occur. These differences are part of the natural and handcrafted character of the product and help make each piece distinctive.

Traditional craftsmanship is not simply a set of instructions that can be copied from a manual. Much of its knowledge lies in understanding materials—knowing how a piece of stone responds to pressure, how wood behaves during carving, or how a particular surface should be polished.

By bringing traditional techniques into contemporary workshops, we hope to create an environment where Chinese traditional craftsmanship can continue to develop rather than becoming frozen in history.

For us, cultural continuity does not mean producing everything exactly as it was made hundreds of years ago. It means preserving valuable skills while allowing new generations to reinterpret them.
